Il concerto che si è tenuto al Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova Domenica 12 Marzo, ha avuto la forza di riunire, nel nome del poeta della canzone, una parte illustre e vasta della musica leggera italiana.
In teatro ad applaudire oltre 2000 persone e fuori in piazza davanti ai megaschermi migliaia e migliaia di genovesi e non tutti per il 'loro' De Andrè. "Ero a Londra una settimana prima di questo appuntamento, non ne sapevo quasi nulla - dice Zucchero - poi venni a sapere da Dori
Ghezzi che avevano già aderito tanti miei colleghi, e che aveva già individuato la canzone che mi si addiceva (HO VISTO NINA VOLARE).
Però ho voluto riascoltarmi praticamente tutti i dischi di Fabrizio, perché non volevo sbagliare e volevo esserci solo se mi sentivo all'altezza. Alla fine aveva ragione Dori e mi sono preparato con grande impegno su questa meravigliosa canzone, rispettandone la tonalità sussurrata
ma arricchendola di fraseggi soul-blues.
L'ho leggermente stravolta, avvicinandola un po' alle mie 'Diamante' o 'Dune mosse'. La poesia di Fabrizio è molto più profonda e sottile di quella di tanti mostri sacri americani. Potrei paragonarlo solo a Tom Waits o a Bob Dylan prima maniera.
Ho incontrato De Andrè solo una volta ad una cena, forse l'unica occasione mondana a cui lui abbia mai partecipato. Casualmente sedevo accanto a lui e a Dori e più il tempo passava più mi accorgevo che i suoi punti di vista erano i miei e che le cose che diceva erano le mie, quando
apriva bocca , diceva cose che avrei voluto dire anch'io.
Era molto diretto, senza fronzoli, né convenevoli: "dietro ogni blasfemo c'è un giardino incantato". Dopo di allora l'ho seguito da lontano, conoscendolo attraverso le parole degli altri, come Mauro Pagani. Mi spiace molto che se ne sia andato, avrei voluto conoscerlo meglio.
'HO VISTO NINA VOLARE' è una ballata contenuta nell'album 'Anime Salve'
di De Andrè e Fossati, che ha una storia curiosa ed un retroscena amaro.
Mi hanno detto che nel preparare il disco Ivano e Fabrizio scesero nel
meridione alla ricerca di spunti popolari. Sentirono un aneddoto sul
disagio di vecchi e bambini: incapaci di produrre lavoro, contribuivano
ai bilanci familiari separando in bocca la cera dal miele, sputandoli
in recipienti separati.
Quando Fabrizio chiese a quando risalisse quell'uso, la donna che aveva
appena finito il racconto fece vedere una fotografia che commentava
quel lavoro: risaliva soltanto a vent'anni prima - al 1969! Genova è
stata la nostra piccola Woodstock, un evento che partì in sordina e
che piano piano è diventato grande nel mondo.
Cose del genere fanno bene alla musica e all'anima e ce ne vorrebbero molte di più.

The concert which was held at the Carlo Felice Theatre in Genoa on Sunday 12 March had the power to bring together, in the name of the “poet of song”, an illustrious and extensive slice of Italian popular music.
More than 2000 people inside the theatre, and thousands and thousands of Genoese and visitors outside in the square before the giant screen were all there for “their” De Andrè. "I was in London a week before the event; I knew almost nothing about it – says Zucchero – and then I found out from Dori Ghezzi that loads of my colleagues had already got involved, and that she had already chosen the song that would be best for me (HO VISTO NINA VOLARE).
In any case I wanted to listen again to practically all Fabrizio’s records because I didn’t want to get anything wrong and I only wanted to be there if I felt I was up to it. In the end Dori was right, and I put a lot of work into this wonderful song, keeping to the whispered tonality but enriching it with soul-blues phrasing.
I distorted it slightly, making it a bit close to my Diamante or Dune mosse. Fabrizio’s poetry is much deeper and more subtle than many American legendary figures. I could compare him only to Tom Waits or early Bob Dylan.
I only met De Andrè once at a dinner, perhaps the only celebrity social event he ever took part in. I casually sat down next to him and Dori and the more time went by the more I realised that his opinions were the same as mine and that the things he said were mine. When he spoke he said things that I also wanted to say.
He was very direct, plain-speaking, without ceremony: "behind every blasphemy there’s an enchanted garden”. Since then I followed him from a distance, getting to know him through the words of others, such as Mauro Pagani. I’m very sorry that he’s gone. I would have liked to have got to know him better.
'HO VISTO NINA VOLARE' is a ballad included on the album Anime Salve by De Andrè and Fossati, which has a curious history and a bitter background. I’ve been told that when preparing the record Ivano and Fabrizio went down to the south of Italy looking for popular sources of inspiration. They heard a tale about the suffering of old people and children: unable to wok, they contributed to the family finances by separating wax from honey in their mouths, then spitting them into separate containers.
When Fabrizio asked when this custom dated back to the woman who had just finished telling the story showed them a picture that depicted that work: it dated back to only twenty years ago – to 1969! Genoa was our mini Woodstock, an event that started quietly and then gradually became something significant in the world.
These sorts of things are good for music and for the soul and there should be a lot more of them.
