La sera del 29 giugno Zucchero era a Viareggio a cena con il suo amico promoter Mimmo D’Alessandro, nella vicina stazione ferroviaria un treno merci carico di gas deragliando è scoppiato e le fiamme hanno investito un intero quartiere causando 31 morti, decine di feriti anche gravi e lasciando centinaia di famiglie senza casa. A distanza di un mese il Sindaco Luca Lunardini e il promoter D’Alessandro hanno chiesto a Zucchero, da anni legato alla versilia, se potesse in qualche modo mettere in piedi un concerto benefico, per non dimenticare, a favore della vittime del disastro. Zucchero, molto toccato dalla tragedia, ha subito accettato e si è impegnato totalmente dando il suo supporto e contributo nell’organizzazione di questo grande evento, chiamando i suoi amici/artisti che a loro volta hanno subito aderito, con grande sensibilità, alcuni addirittura cancellando impegni già presi. In sole 2 settimane la macchina organizzativa si è messa in moto e ne è venuto fuori il Concerto Per Viareggio. Il 19 agosto 2009 allo Stadio dei Pini di Viareggio più di 17mila persone hanno assisto ad una notte magica davanti ad un palco sul quale si sono alternati ben 21 artisti per 4 ore e mezzo di grande musica divertimento e sensibilità. Oltre ai cantanti sono intervenuti anche personaggi dello spettacolo (Carlo Conti, Giorgio Panariello, Stefania Sandrelli) e dello sport (Marcello Lippi, Paolo Maldini, Massimo Moratti, Pierluigi Collina) quest’ultimo impegnato in prima persona insieme a Zucchero, Mimmo D’Alessandro e giunta comunale nell’organizzazione dell’evento. Zucchero ha terminato la piacevole maratona musicale suonando: Diavolo In Me con Solomon Burke, Baila, Dio È Morto con Bebbe Carletti dei Nomadi al piano, Dune Mosse con Jeff Beck alla chitarra (tastiere Jason Rebello), Every breath you take con Sting, Fragile (per la prima volta sullo stesso palco Zucchero, Sting e Jeff Beck), Così Celeste con Coro delle voci bianche del “Festival Puccini” e Miserere in duetto virtuale con Luciano Pavarotti sui grandi schermi. Dopo il concerto tutti gli artisti si sono ritrovati all’after show durante il quale sono stati messi all’asta vari oggetti d’arte e veri e propri “cimeli per appassionati” tra cui un prezioso quadro del pittore lucchese Antonio Possenti, alcune maglie della Nazionale portate da Marcello Lippi, la Fender autografata da Jeff Beck, il trono di Solomon Burke e un prezioso cappello dalla collezione di Zucchero. L’incasso della serata è stato di oltre 400.000 euro che verranno devoluti in beneficenza alle famiglie delle vittime. Zucchero ha deciso di costituire una fondazione che possa gestire in modo trasparente e serio i fondi ricavati dalla manifestazione nominando Pierluigi Collina presidente della suddetta ONLUS in quanto persona integerrima e di indubbia onestà che seguirà lo sviluppo e la distribuzione dei fondi. On 29 June, Zucchero was in Viareggio having dinner with his friend the promoter Mimmo D’Alessandro, when a goods train loaded with natural gas derailed at the railway station nearby. The wagons exploded and the flames quickly spread over an entire district of the city causing 31 deaths, dozens of injuries, also serious, and leaving hundreds of families without their homes. A month later, the Mayor Luca Lunardini and D’Alessandro asked Zucchero, who has had close ties with Viareggio for many years, if he could organise a fund-raising concert to remind people of the terrible event and to help the victims of the disaster. Zucchero, who was obviously greatly touched by the tragedy, immediately agreed and did all he could to help and contribute to the organisation of this big event, calling up his friend/artists who also joined in the cause straight away with great enthusiasm, some even cancelling previously made commitments. The organisational machine managed to create the “Concert For Viareggio” in just 2 weeks. On 19 August 2009, at the Pini Stadium in Viareggio, more than 17 thousand people took part in a magical evening full of great music, enjoyment but also serious reflection, in which as many as 21 artists performed on stage for 4 and a half hours. Besides numerous singers, there were also show business personalities (Carlo Conti, Giorgio Panariello and Stefania Sandrelli) and sports personalities (Marcello Lippi, Paolo Maldini, Massimo Moratti and Pierluigi Collina); the latter was personally involved in the organisation of the event together with Zucchero, Mimmo D’Alessandro and the town council. They were joined for the Zucchero set by: Mario Schilirò (guitar), Derek Wilson (drums), James Thompson (sax) and Massimo Greco (trumpet). Zucchero ended the amazing musical marathon playing: Diavolo In Me with Solomon Burke, Baila, Dio È Morto with Bebbe Carletti from the Nomadi on the piano, Dune Mosse with Jeff Beck on the guitar (Jason Rebello on keyboards), Every breath you take with Sting, Fragile (with Zucchero, Sting and Jeff Beck on stage together or the first time), Così Celeste with the “Festival Puccini” female choir and Miserere in a virtual duet with Luciano Pavarotti on the big screens. After the concert all the artists took part in the “after-show” during which various objets d’art and veritable “memorabilia for devotees” were auctioned, including a valuable picture by the Luca painter, Antonio Possenti, a number of Italian football team shirts brought by Marcello Lippi, a Fender guitar signed by Jeff Beck, Solomon Burke’s throne and a precious hat from Zucchero’s collection. More than ? 400,000 were raised during the evening, to be donated to the families of the victims. Zucchero has decided to set up a foundation to manage the funds raised by the event in a transparent and proper way, appointing Pierluigi Collina, a person of the highest principles, as president of the aforementioned non-profit-making foundation, who will oversee the development and distribution of the funds.
